Does anyone remember who their first style icons were? They may have been pop stars or even cartoon characters. I must say I had an advantage. My first style icon was, without a doubt my Mom-Maxine Saint Clair.
Before I was born, my Mom was living in a rooming house in the Lower East Side making her living painting portraits. She spent her evenings reveling in the Manhattan club scene with a slew of glamorous, wild, and sometimes very famous East Village artists. She had also spent time working for a small makeup company called Paint who released some of the first wildly colored cosmetics (yellow eye shadow anyone?).
You can't even imagine the stories my Mom has about New York in the early eighties and I hope one day she puts them all into a book, but for now I would love to share with you her wonderful photographs.
My Moms style was one part pure 80s glamour, one part punk rock, and all with just a little bit of retro sensibility. Marvel at her wonderful hats, over size earrings, and subtle sense of humor. I'm sure you'll recognize many of the accessories, I've inherited more than I can count!

Sedmikrasky or "Daisies" is a notable Czech new wave film from 1966 about two young girls who have decided to spoil themselves because the world has gone so bad. What follows is over an hour of breathtaking girly imagery and delightful scenarios that invoke the essence of spring time, and femininity making the world seem like a magical and mischievous place. Sedmikrasky teaches us that girl-centric cinema doesn't need to be watered down to the modern day "chick flick". The film is beautiful, sexy, avant garde, and hilarious. Scenes are strewn with images of roses, butterflies, rich foods and cakes, playful dresses, and expensive alcohol. The girls poke fun at adult situations, squeezing expensive meals out of rich old men, and getting giggling drunk in fancy clubs. Their behavior is apologetically young and feminine and completely delightful to behold. They are everything a girl aught to be.

I've been rediscovering my love for early Madonna lately so I watched Desperately Seeking Susan the other night and went crazy over the style. Faded neons, messy glamour, and a casual nod to punk fashion. I grew up with this Madonna and I will never stop loving her.

Ann Margret's fashion in The Swinger can't be beat. Ultra matchy ensembles, extravagantly set hair, and abuse of color blocking. She seems to have a full outfit for every occasion in the brightest of colors. A kelly green sweater, leather coat, and leather hair scarf set for riding her scooter. A lemon yellow bathrobe, towel, and peep toe heels get up for lounging after a shower. A white feather coat lined in hot pink sequins makes an appearance in a burlesque number toward the end. These are some of the outfits I could not find photos of.  Here is what I dug up.
